Santanyi

Santanyí is a municipality and a rural and authentic city in the southeast of the island. The village is surrounded by breathtaking golden sandstone buildings and very close to more than 48 km of beautiful coastline and the second largest natural park of the Balearic Islands, with a privileged location inland.   What makes Santanyi special are the exquisite restaurants and hotels combined with a laid-back atmosphere, they get a nice Santanyi. Many international artists were attracted by the surrounding environment, the light and the ambience. Today, art in Santanyí still plays a central role and you can discover many different galleries and workshops in the narrow streets of the peaceful village.   The locals know each other and like to linger on a chat with the neighbors. Visitors enjoy watching the daily routine over a glass of wine from one of the many terraces on the main square, or a daily routine with a 'café con leche'.   You do not have to look great to find traces of Santanyí's pirate-heavy past. The fortified city walls and the Porta Murdada (city gate) are still symbols of the fear of previous generations of constantly threatening attacks by pirates who plagued the city. Many residents slept in the locked church of the city because of the Moorish invasions in Santanyí.   Drive to the nearby Cala Llonga and see the remains of the 18th-century fortress, built to ward off attacks and where you can still admire the loopholes for the cannons. The Torre d'en Beu, in Cala Figuera and other Diverse Defense Towers were positioned along the coast.   The city's original name, Santi Annini, means 'Lamb of God', a symbol that can be found in the church and coat of arms of Santanyí.

Only a few kilometers from the southeastern coast of Mallorca lies the rural town of Santanyi. Beside agricultural holdings, based on the cultivation of almond trees have specialized, is the removal of sand-lime is the most important industry in Santanyi.
