Within ten years, the population Palmas has grown to 422,387 from 333,925. 100 years ago, Palma had only 67,000 inhabitants.
The population density in the city of 1923 people per square kilometer. For comparison: In Madrid, there are 5000, 16,000 people in Barcelona.
Palma has an area of 20,863 hectares, or 208 square kilometers and borders the following municipalities: Calvia, Puigpunyent, Esporles, Valldemossa, Bunyola, Marratxí, Santa Eugènia, Algaida, Llucmajor.
The municipal budget is for the current year 415 million euros. That is nearly $ 1,000 per capita.
Palma is 2133 years old. The city was founded by the Roman consul Caecilius Metellus Baleárico in 123 BC.
The town has 17 villages and towns: S'Aranjasa, Can Pastilla, Casa Blanca, Coll d'en Rabassa, Son Ferriol, Establiments, Gènova, Sat Indioteria, It Pil.lari, Sant Agustí, Sant Jordi, Secar de la Real Son Sant Joan, Son Sardina, Son Serra, Sat Vileta, Playa de Palma.
The highest area is Gènova - 140 meters above sea level. The Bellver Castle is 137 meters high.
The coldest month is usually January with 15 degrees maximum and minimum temperature 3'5 °. The warmest month is 31 degrees with maximum and minimum temperature of 18 degree August. It rains on average 31 days per year at 2756 hours of sunshine. The lowest temperatures were measured in 1956, when the Borne was covered with a several-centimeter-thick layer of snow.
Since the introduction of democracy in Palma, Mallorca was ruled by four mayors: Ramón Aguiló (PSOE) from 1979 to 1991, Joan Fageda (PP) from 1991 to 2003; Catalina Cirer (PP) from 2003 to 2007; Aina Calvo (PSOE) of 2007 to date.
Palma has 31 urban bus lines, the sail of 150 buses. Then there are the Metro and almost 1250 taxis. By train one can reach the following communities: Soller, Marratxí, Santa Maria, Alaro, Consell, Binissalem Lloseta, Inca, Sineu, Llubí, Sant Joan Miro, Petra, Manacor and Sa Pobla.
The City has six theaters - Auditorium, Teatre Pincipal, Teatre Municipal, Casa de Cultura Forteza, Teatre Sans, Teatre del Mar - and seven cinemas - Augusta, Metropolitan, Portopí Centro, Portopí Terrazas, Renoir, Rivoli and Ocimax - with a total of 60 rooms. Occasionally, there are also film-cycles in the Cultural Sa Nostra, or in the Library Can Sales.
Palma has 23 public libraries in all districts. 30 municipal cultural centers offer courses and other activities, involving 5412 Palmesaner. There are nine centers for children and adolescents.
Apart from the private galleries Palma has 25 museums and exhibition spaces.
The port town is popular with cruise passengers. 2008 429 cruise ships put on with 1'1 million passengers. 4'1 ferry passengers were counted. The envelope of merchandise amounted to 13'2 million tons.
The airport of Palma is the third largest in Spain after Madrid and Barcelona, the zwölfgrößte in Europe. It has 173 international and 30 national direct. 91 airlines operate from here. Every year 23 million passengers are handled. In high season, working at Son Sant Joan 10,000 people.
The following clinics are run by the Social Security: Son Dureta Son Llàtzer, Joan March, Cruz Roja, Sant Joan de Déu, Hospital General, the Department of Psychiatry and Verge de Salut. Then there are the private Palmaplanas, Clínica Rotger, Clínica Juaneda, Policlínica Miramar, Clínic Balear, Mutua Balear, Capistrano and Femenía. These are 30 health centers in different districts.
Palma has 111 schools, eight municipal and 45 private kindergartens. The official language school offers courses in English, French, German, Italian, Russian, Arabic, Catalan and Spanish for foreigners. The University of the Balearic Islands offers 27 fields of study.
In Palma 1300 bars, cafeterias and restaurants are registered, nine exclusively for gays. There are also more than 80 discos and nightclubs.
The city has 55 churches, over which the Archbishop of Mallorca. There are also two mosques, a synagogue and an Anglican church. Members of other faiths such as evangelical church, Reformed Baptists, Jehovah's Witnesses, Orthodox, Seventh-Day Adventists and Baptists gather in different rooms.
Eight sports and 66 private gyms can be found in Palma. There are 46 sports federations and four golf courses. In addition, the Hippodrome and eight marinas: Club de Mar, Real Club Náutico, Port de Palma, Club Náutic Portixol Club Marítim Molinar de Levante, Cala Gamba Club Náutic, Marina Port de Mallorca, Club Marítim Sant Antoni de la Platja, S Club Náutic 'Arenal.
Five urban markets are open from Monday to Saturday: Camp Redó, Levante, Olivar, Pere Garau and Santa Catalina.
In Palma, there are 30 colleges, 83 business associations and 63 retail associations.

The people of Palma have an average annual per capita income of 28,838 euros. This is slightly higher than the Spanish average, but below that of the Basque Country (31,952 euros), Madrid (30,998 euros), Navarra (30,402 euros), Catalonia (27,915 euros) and Aragon (26,107 euros).

In Palma 2008 387 persons were arrested for domestic violence. The police received 706 calls because of this offense.
Other "residents" of Palma: 54,203 dogs, 721 cats (only registered pets). Annually, about 10,000 exposed animals. Currently are waiting in the municipal animal shelters 203 dogs and cats for a new home.
