In the southeast of Mallorca near Felanitx, the idyllic fishing port of Porto Colom is located on a large bay, in its well-protected location could develop the largest natural harbor in Mallorca. Like many other places in Mallorca, Portocolom claims to be the birthplace of navigator Christopher Columbus. Christopher Columbus is also named after Portocolom. As a traditional fishing village, Portocolom has retained much of its original charm. The village nestles around one of the island's largest, sheltered bays, where boathouses, the lighthouse and boats add to the picturesque look of the place like puzzle pieces. Sport boats next to fishing boats are located on the long quay. From here you can book wonderful boat trips. Porto Colom was first mentioned in the 13th century. At that time, the wineries of Felanitx shipped their products from here to mainland Spain and other Mediterranean regions. The town itself is divided into an old town area in the harbor area and the touristy Neustadt at the bay Cala Marcal. In the village it is quiet, just south of the center has formed a holiday development on the Cala Marcal, with hotels, bars and restaurants. If you do not want too much excitement, you can spend a holiday in a Mediterranean atmosphere here. In addition to the picturesque, beautiful harbor, there are several fine sandy dream bays in Porto Colom. The most famous of these is S'Arenal. Here you can serve tasty fish dishes and cocktails in one of the chiringuitos right on the water. The old town, which is located on a peninsula and has the square with the church of Sant Jaume as the center, has been inhabited for over 100 years. However, in earlier times, fishing was not the main activity here, but mainly wine trade. In the 70s, the first pensions and hotels in Cala Marcal were added. Portocolom, however, has remained able to maintain a balance between the place as a tourist resort and the place as a place of residence.
